Aung La Nsang is a Myanmar-born mixed martial artist who rose from a modest background in Kachin State to become one of the most prominent fighters in Asian MMA. After moving to the United States in 2003 for university, he balanced academic life and work as a migratory beekeeper with developing his fighting career. Making his professional debut in 2005, he built a reputation for strong submission skills on the regional circuit, fighting in promotions such as King of the Cage and Ring of Combat, though his early career included setbacks.
His breakthrough came after joining ONE Championship in 2014. By 2016, he had returned to Myanmar to compete in front of a home audience, quickly becoming a national icon. In 2017, he made history by becoming Myanmar’s first world champion in a major global sport, winning the ONE Middleweight World Championship. The following year marked the peak of his career, as he captured the ONE Light Heavyweight World Championship as well, becoming a rare simultaneous two-division champion. During this period, he successfully defended his titles multiple times in high-profile bouts, including several acclaimed fights in Yangon and abroad.
From 2020 onward, his career entered a transitional phase. He lost both his middleweight and light heavyweight titles to Reinier de Ridder and subsequently moved into a competitive but less dominant run, alternating between wins and losses against top contenders. Despite no longer holding championships, he remained a respected and dangerous veteran, earning notable victories and performance bonuses.
Outside the cage, Aung La became a major public figure in Myanmar, known for charitable work, advocacy for education and wildlife conservation, and representing national pride on the international stage. He concluded his career with a victory in his retirement fight and was inducted into the ONE Championship Hall of Fame, cementing his legacy as one of Myanmar’s greatest athletes and a pioneering figure in the country’s presence in global mixed martial arts.
